Effects of Contact Time and Flow Configuration on the Acid Mine Drainage Remediation Capabilities of Pervious Concrete

This paper investigates the Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) remediation capabilities of pozzolanic pervious concrete Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRBs) with a specific focus on effects flow configuration and contact time efficiency. Raw AMD was collected from an abandoned coal mine. Two configurations, gravity column flow, were tested at laboratory scale gradually increasing times. The two orders magnitude less liquid-concrete achieved treated water quality equivalent to high retention configuration. Concentrations iron, aluminium, sulphate, magnesium sodium reduced by more than 99%, 80%, 17%, 22% 20%, respectively, limits while calcium potassium concentrations increased up 16% 300%, respectively. study findings indicate that lifecycle costs PRBs can be significantly when are operated under flow.
